TRADITIONAL MUSIC
norwegian music from Norway
The Norwegian folk, traditional, world- and Sámi music scenes are currently at a peak in creativity and productivity. Unlike many other European countries, Norway has an unbroken folk music tradition. Since folk music has been passed along continuously from generation to generation, there has been no need for a folk music revival. Norwegian folk music, both vocal and instrumental, is usually performed by soloists. Instrumental music is most commonly played on the fiddle or on the Hardanger fiddle, which is considered the national instrument of Norway. The Hardanger fiddle is a violin with four or five sympathetic strings. It is beautifully decorated and is constructed somewhat differently from an ordinary violin. In addition to the musical traditions of Southern and Middle-Norway, the North also holds treasures in the form of Sámi folk music represented by a powerful chanting vocal style called joik performed by the indigenous people of Lapland. Some of the most active on both the Norwegian and Sámi scenes include artists Adjagas, Majorstuen, Annbjørg Lien, Mari Boine and Unni Løvlid.
