|This category contains a wide range of forms of expression ranging from classical and everlasting compositions by Norways greatest composer Edvard Grieg to the out-there noise explorations of Maja Ratkje. From Grieg and his contemporaries Halfdan Kjerulf and violin virtuoso Ole Bull to successors like Christian Sinding, Ludvig Irgens Jensen, Harald Sæverud, Geirr Tveitt and Johan Kvandal the Romantic tradition has been maintained at a very high standard both through timeless compositions and renditions by such important orchestral institutions as the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra, the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, the Norwegian Chamber Orchestra and soloists like pianist Leif Ove Andsnes and cellist Truls Mørk. Norwegian non-tonal art music owes a great deal to composer Fartein Valen and his peer Finn Mortensen who spearheaded the development of post-classical music. They were followed by the scenes best known composer; electronic pioneer Arne Nordheim who remains one of the Norwegian music scenes most respected figures. Other composers enjoying considerable recognition at home and abroad include Olav Anton Thommessen, Lasse Thoresen, Cecilie Ore and Rolf Wallin. A young generation of composers educated at the Norwegian Academy of Music has brought sonic and tonal exploration to a new level. Composers such as Eivind Buene, Lars Petter Hagen and Maja Ratkje represent the scenes new voices and maintain a strong tradition of musical experimentation.|
